Julia Stryker North

Theater Director

30 years ago, Positivity Children’s Theatre made its debut in a pole barn on Madeline Island with 30 children participating. Co-founder and managing Director, Julie Stryker North didn’t realize with that first performance that Positivity Children’s Theatre would become a highlight of Madeline Island summers. Since its inception, over 600 children have participated and been given access to hands-on experience in creating a theater production; from writing to acting, music, choreography, set and stage design. Though these efforts the children have been enriched and most importantly had their enthusiasm lit for the performing arts.

Julie’s passion for the arts and acting blossomed at a young age. Participation in stage productions in high school and education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison gave her a foundation for her current work not only with PCT but also through involvement in many productions at StageNorth in Washburn, Wisconsin as an actor, director, teacher and stage manager. Julia is also a pupeteer and has done many workshops with children to design and create original puppet shows. She is also a founding member/producer of the Madeline Island Radio Hour and uses her considerable knowledgebase to keep artistic endeavors blossoming on Madeline Island.

What energizes you as you consider the future of the arts in Wisconsin?

As I look at the youth in Wisconsin and in our country, I see our future. Theater as a medium in the arts can be a very powerful tool to convey a reflection of the world around us. I see theater as a great outlet for our children to be heard. When they are allowed to create their own observations and feelings of their world, they are paying attention and they are the future.

Where we can find your work?

Julie continues to be involved in many aspects of her community on Madeline Island throughout the year. In the summer you can find her working with the children on the next production for Positivity Children’s Theatre.
