Deb Neuman

Music Educator

Deb Neuman has been involved in music endeavors her entire career.  She has taught music and creative movement for children and adults in a variety of settings in both the Madison and Menomonie areas, including children’s music classes and K-12 music as a substitute.  She has had a long relationship with ARTS for ALL Wisconsin (AFA), formerly VSA Wisconsin.  As a Music Therapist this was a perfect fit, as AFA’s mission is to expand the capabilities, confidence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities through the arts.  In her 30 years with AFA, Deb led many school based Artist Residency programs, developed and led an adult AFA choir in Menomonie, served as Western District Director and most recently brought music programs to 4K and Middle School students in the Madison area.

Even after all these years, Deb continues to be amazed by the power of the arts to reach out and to give unique opportunities to participants to grow and learn.  Though her sessions are planned for the needs of participants with disabilities, Deb finds that their peers benefit from the activities equally.  Music activities in her residencies are designed to increase specific goals in areas such as speech/language, social skills, motor skills, sensory integration, and self-expression just to name a few.  Through the joy of music, participants develop improved skills in a fun way.

What energizes you as you consider the future of the arts in Wisconsin?

Over and over again, Deb witnesses the magic and power of music.  She sees increased understanding of how the arts support learning and growth, especially in school settings.  Through AFA and the countless community arts agencies in our state, there are so many opportunities to experience the arts and its many forms.  More people are seeing what we know and believe–the arts are for everyone!
